English writing is one of the four basic language skills. It is also the most difficult one. The level of writing is taken to be a major index of the comprehensive language abilities. English writing is getting increasingly important in senior English teaching. There are various reasons about it. First, developing the students' ability of English writing skills is one of the most important targets in English teaching at the senior high school. Second, English writing is an indispensable part of test of university entrance examination. What's more, the percentage of the score in the university entrance examination in Jiangsu will be greater in 2008. Last but not least, writing skills will be beneficial to the students in their future . Although there have been many teaching researches in this subject reported home and abroad , few are concerned with the senior high school. At present, although the teaching of English writing in senior high school isn't optimistic, it is nevertheless difficult for both teachers and students. Writing, as a kind of written form of communication to express thoughts, is also a kind of complex mental activity. We teachers find it hard to really understand the difficulty and pains-taking efforts on the part of- the students in writing until we admit this process. Only then can we find out the suitable way for our students to learn English writing. To the senior high school students, text books and classroom teaching are the major ways to obtain knowledge. English text book is a kind of medium for the teachers in their classroom activities as well as a model in both content and form. In this study, I will discuss the question through a comparison between Advance with English and English Senior, supported by the result of class activities, inquiries and tests, it is found that open model of task-based teaching of writing carries special significance for the teaching of writing. In conclusion, some suggestions are put forward for dealing with the existing problems.
