Reading ability is one of the basic language skills requested by National Curriculum Standards. For Chinese students, reading has become the most important skill in English learning because it is the most common way through which the students are exposed to the target language, so it is the most effective way to study foreign language. Along with the education reform, the purpose of English education is changed into teaching the students how to learn, how to develop, and how to acquire the ability of life-long learning, more and more educators pay great attentions to research of improving the reading skills. Therefore, the problem of how to use the reading materials properly to improve students' reading skill and reading ability in Secondary school is worth considering.There are various reading methods for students to read. This paper introduces four effective reading methods to illustrate how to train students' reading skills and the reading abilities. First, using context to help the students guess the new words. We know that language relies on the context; meanwhile, the context can offer many clues to help students understand the passage further. Second, familiarity with the writing styles can help students to find the important points and get an accurate comprehension of the material. Different materials have different writing styles. If students can not recognize the writing styles, they will feel in the dark while reading. By using this, teachers can train students' skimming and scanning skills and hence improving their reading speed. Third, reading cooperatively. It is an effective method to involve students in reading. There are many advantages of this method. For instance, while reading the passage on their own initiative, good students can help others. Finally, offering abundant background knowledge. The reader's background knowledge is an important factors to reading comprehension. According to Schema Theory, background knowledge can help readers to establish a schema of the material. The more background knowledge the readers have, the more quickly they understand the material.Based on reading psychology Theories, the present paper makes attempts to research how to apply effective reading methods by Literature, Survey & Experimental Study.This paper consists of five parts.Part One is an introduction. It presents the importance and the necessary of the research. Meanwhile, the author gives the framework of the paper.Part Two is concerned with the state of the research of reading theories and it interprets the research of the reading theories. And in the very chapter, the author analyses the purposes of the typical reading class.Part Three concentrates on the requirement proposed by National Curriculum Standards and makes a further analysis.Part Four offers sample activities illustration of how to apply the effective methods to improve the reading abilities and reading skills.Part Five is the conclusion and it points out the importance of using effective reading methods to improve reading skills. Meanwhile, it also points out that this thesis is only a tentative study and there still remain some unsolved problems for me to exert more efforts in the future.It is expected that the present thesis will be useful for the further study of the related issues and that it will receive some responses from teachers who are also longing for the improvements of teaching and learning in English reading.
