Reading is not only the most important purpose of language leaning but also the most important means of language learning. So reading has been emphasized in English teaching by all the teachers and students. But the achievements are not satisfying. High school students complain that although they spend lots of time and effort in reading, they get little improvement. Besides, discrepancy turns to be greater. There are many factors leading to the phenomenon. This paper concentrates on the very important one of the factors---the relation between application of reading strategies and improving of reading ability.First of all, the definitions of reading and reading strategies are discussed to the full. Then on the theoretical basis, a questionnaire was carried out among 100 students. The results of the questionnaire are analyzed. The main findings are as follows.1. Most of the students paid little attention to reading strategies while reading.2. Successful learners differ from unsuccessful learners in reading strategy use .Successful learners use reading strategies more frequently and flexibly than unsuccessful ones.After careful consideration of the theoretical basis and the findings of the questionnaire, a view is held that lack of reading strategies is one of the main factors that affect improvement of reading ability. Based on the view, this paper give some suggestions on strategy instruction to improve the students'reading ability. The following experiment made by the author proves that the suggestions are effective.
