On one hand, more and more attention was given to early number sense, which was an important aspect of cognitive development. On the other hand, foreign research revealed correlation between finger gnosis and number ability, and some even showed that children's scores in finger gnosis test could predicted their later numerical performance. So the purpose of this study is to examine the main components of early number sense and then investigate relationship between finger gnosts and these number abilities in Chinese culture. As far as it was concerned, after researching into some relevant references,a sample of 60 children aged 4 and 5 was selected from two kindergartens in Chongqing for series of experiments and other tests.Based on this, some statistical methods, such as analysis of variance, nonparanometer test, correlation analysis and regression analysis, were employed for analyzing data collected. In the end of the article, educational suggestions were put forward based on conclusions, and the problems unresolved and prospects were also considered. The main conclusions drawn by this research are as follows:Firstly, single finger recognition performance is better than stimultanous recognition, while stimultanous recognition scores are higher than successive recognition.Finger recognition scores of children aged 5 are a little higher than those aged 4,but the differences are not significant. However, such differences are significant on hand drawing scores.Secondly, there is extremely significant correlation between finger recognition and hand drawing.Thirdly,as items increase, the scores of subtizing and estimation decrease. And the performance aged 5 in both tasks is better than that aged 4,but the differences are not significant.Fourthly, both collection judgement and number comparison show distance effect and quantity efffect, that is,the acurracy becomes higher and the judgement goes faster as the distance increases and the quantity decreases. However, ordinality effect doesn't exist(no significant defferences between small-to-large order and large-to-small order),As far as age is concerned, both tasks show signicifant differences on reacion time, while the latter but the former reveals significant differences on scores.Fifthly, most children aged 4 and 5 could count correctly to teens, and children aged 5 even are able to count to quantity larger than 20 and grasp kinds of counting principles. And age differences are significant in both counting task and addition task.Sixthly, there is extremely significant positive correlation between finger gnosis and subtizing, and the scores of the former could extremely significantly predict the performance of the latter. So does the estimation task.Seventhly,as for collection judgement and narnber comparison, finger gnosis shows extremely significant positive correlation to their scores but negative correlation to their reaction time.Reaction time in both tasks could be predicted extremely significantly by finger gnosis, and so does scores in collection comparison task.Eighthly, there is extremely significant positive correlation between finger gnosis and counting, and the former could extremely significantly predict the scores of the latter. So does the addition task.
