Foreign language teaching materials play a vital role in reforming foreign language teaching. Choosing and using the suitable coursebook is one of the important factors to complete the teaching contents and achieve the teaching goals. With the reform of courses on elementary education coming into practice and the development of foreign language teaching, more and more foreign language teaching coursebooks have come into the market. In that case, it is very important to evaluate these coursebooks. The new Senior English for China (Revised SEFC) is one of these coursebooks. This set was successfully revised by People's Education Press and began to be used throughout the country from the autumn semester of 2003 and the whole set was completed in 2006. Being a coursebook newly published and widely used, timely evaluation of SEFC is in need since it can provide some feedback that may be helpful for its revision and implementation. There are five chapters in this thesis. Chapter One briefly elaborates on the current curriculum reform in basic education, the significance of the study, the two research questions and the layout of the whole thesis. Chapter Two first provides some basic information about the New English Curriculum Standards, especially the new teaching approach----Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT), and then gives an overview of coursebooks, coursebook design and compilation, coursebook evaluation and selection. Chapter Three involves one aspect of the research, a qualitative analysis of SEFC with the help from He's"The general evaluation table of coursebooks. Chapter Four is concerned with the quantitative research of SEFC to evaluate SEFC from the point of view of teachers and students. Chapter Five concludes the whole thesis. It summarizes the major findings around the research questions and discuss the implications of the research findings for language teaching. Finally, some limitations of the study will be addressed .The author hopes this thesis will help in the evaluation of coursebooks and hopes this will aid coursebook using.
