Teaching material plays an indispensable role in English language teaching. With the development of curriculum standards, the situation of one syllabus with one kind of teaching material has been changed. The varieties of teaching materials not only satisfy the needs of various areas and schools but also give rise to many textbooks flood the market which makes us worry about the quality of them because some utilitarian ones come into being without notice in the market. Thus, selecting the proper teaching material is of great importance, so does the research of coursebook evaluation has been receiving more and more attention.This thesis aims to borrow ideas from the achievement of evaluating and investigating teaching materials at home and abroad, trying to do an empirical study on the applicability of teachers and students towards NSE coursebook in three Junior High School in Nanning, taking 40 English teachers and 300 students as the research object, through the ways of carrying out the internal evaluation of NSE coursebook mainly based on the text analysis as well as the external evaluation based on questionnaire and interview, analyzing how NSE coursebook reach the requirements of curriculum standard and the actual needs of teachers and learners. The major findings of the research turn out that NSE coursebook reach the requirements of curriculum standard towards the aspects of language skills, language knowledge, affect and attitude, learning strategy and cultural awareness to a large extent. Meanwhile, it basically satisfies the actual needs of teachers in authentic teaching environment and it takes learners’needs of practical language application and the requirements of examinations into better consideration. However, some insufficiencies can be found out and need to be improved in textbook contents selection, design and arrangement:1. text length and difficulty are oversize increased from junior one to junior two; 2. exercises behind text maintain a single type; 3. limited teaching time makes it difficult to operate module tasks; 4. lacking of the explanations to the usage of special words, phrases and expressions; 5. lacking of creative because all the textbook characters remain the same name in three years. Finally, the author hops to put forward some helpful solutions for teachers, students, educational administrative department and compliers:1. teachers are encouraged to improve professional teaching levels for adjusting different teaching environment, changing teaching methods and strengthening cooperation among learners so as to foster their comprehensive language skills; 2. learners are supported to have a clear understanding of their statues and make use of coursebook actively by taking a preview and exploring learning recourses to enhance autonomous learning ability.3. compliers are suggested to lower down difficulty and optimize coursebook contents to further build links between teaching materials in actual language use and examination.4. Educational Administrative Department are required to pay more emphasis on vocational training of teachers. The above suggestions aim to guide teachers to select and adjust the teaching contents in accordance with authentic teaching environments, help the students to use it better catering to their needs of English study as well as arouse the great attention of relevant department in coursebook evaluation so as to urge compliers to develop more scientific and appropriate English coursebook. Ultimately, the author hopes to provide some reference value to the future field of coursebook evaluation and research at home.
