Phonological awareness is one of the most important research areas in meta-linguistic awareness and has received by far the most attention, The state of reading research today, more than ever before,is bring us closer to a universal account of phonological awareness that underlie learning to reading, mainly because acquisition and development of phonological awareness have been extensively proven to be one of the best predictors of reading facility or disability in early school-agd children. Phonological awaress is the ability to recognize, discriminate, and manipulate linguistic sounds apart from their meanings, it is what enables the listeners to segment the acoustic apeech stream into it's individual components, namely, syllable, onset-rime and phonemes, Some researchers suggest that phonological awareness is important for both early language acquisition, and later linguistic development. This study drew up a nonword measuring paper, the construct validity of English phonological awareness (PA) tasks was examined with a sample of 266 kindergarten children from 12 transitional education program classrooms located in 2 different types of geographic regions in Shanghai and Jiangshan, Zhejiang. The paper attempts to reveal the characters of English awareness from two dimensions, includes English phonetic units and phonetic manipulation; also it reveals the influent factorsof phonological awareness, contains genders and geographic regions etc.The main conclusions are as followed:Firstly, there are marked differences among children of different ages and from different types of geographic regions; but there are no obvious differences between genders.Secondly, children's English phonetic unit awareness was developed with ages. Accuracy performance increased with ages in all phonetic unit awareness tasks. But the developed level of different components was different. It takes order, from high to low, of syllable awareness, onset-rime awareness, phoneme awareness. There was no significant difference between genders but geographic regions, young children tested in shanghai would show higher levels of phonological wawreness at the level of onset-rime awareness than their counterparts tested in jiangshan zhejiang.Thirdly, children's phonetic operation awareness was developed with ages. Accuracy performance increased with ages in all phonetic operation awareness tasks. But the developed level of different components was different. It takes order, from high to low, of phonetic judgement, phonetic blend, phonetic segment. There was no significant difference between genders but geographic regions, Shanghai children performed significantly better than jiangshan children on tasks requiring phonetic judgement and phonetic blend. The paper accords well with suggestion on teaching of phonological awareness.
