Reading ability referred to discriminating and understanding written language, and transferring it into a meaningful language. Reading ability was a hot topic focused and lasted in psychology field. It was also the key points in reading research for students with mild mental retardation. Study on reading ability of students with mild mental retardation is relatively abundant abroad, and the domestic related research is rather lack.Eight hundred and ninety-nine pieces of Chinese test papers are studied from Shanghai city in fourteen districts, and the author investigates the words, sentences, rhetoric, paragraphs and text comprehension ability of students with mild mental retardation by studying the primary information in reading. In addition, we can analyze the difference between students with mild mental retardation and non-retarded children in reading ability.The author comes to the conclusion: reading ability of students with mild mental retardation is rather low generally, and non-retarded children' reading ability is higher. In general, for students with mild mental retardation, understanding words and rhetoric is better than sentence, paragraphs and the texts comprehension are worse. Moreover, reading ability of the students with mild mental retardation is significantly lower than reading ability of non-retarded students in vocabulary, sentences, paragraph and text comprehension. The gaps of comprehension ability between students with mild mental retardation and non-retarded students are rather great in trope rhetoric and personification rhetoric. However, the comprehension ability of between students with mild mental retardation and non-retarded students has no difference for Grade five.Suggestions are proposed to the reading teaching for students with mild mental retardation. The researcher suggests that it is necessary to adjust the teaching target and evaluation methods. The teacher should consolidate the basic knowledge for students with mild mental retardation. In addition, some relevant skills in methods should be indoctrinated to these students.
