Chinese students learn English mainly through taking English classes and reading English articles. Reading is an important way to enhance students'interest in learning foreign languages, accumulating linguistic knowledge, and improving their ability in foreign language learning. The study of reading classes in primary schools has been neglected for a long time. In recent years, this situation has been improved slightly. But the study of teaching English reading only lingers in the stage of stressing teaching style rather than teaching strategy. Therefore a considerable number of English teachers do not know how to give a good reading lesson. Either, do not they know the commonly used teaching strategies of reading, which lets alone how to use the effective teaching strategies to improve the teaching of English? The teachers are unclear of the purpose of the reading teaching, as well as the teaching strategies, which is the bottleneck of the Primary English Teaching of Reading.In view of this situation, it is necessary to know English reading at home and abroad for teaching theory systematically, which teases the current situation of English reading in China's primary school and refines the teaching strategies which are suitable to the current primary school English read-teaching. After exploring the definition,and research background,this thesis analyzes the Present Status of the fifth and sixth graders'English reading in X Primary School and Problems which exist in their reading. Finally,the writer brings forward her ideas to solve the Problems and proposes several teaching strategies in reading classes. The research methods are mainly questionnaire and interview. By analyzing the questionnaire and interviewing the teachers, this study, the author has a more integrated overview of English reading ability of the fifth and sixth graders in X primary School and gives reasonable solutions to some existing problems.The thesis consists of four parts:The first part is about the recent basic research on the teaching strategies in English reading classes. It states the relative concepts and theories about teaching strategies in English reading and summarizes the present research situation in teaching strategies especially about primary school English reading classes in senior period. Meanwhile, it explores the relative factors which influence the English reading efficiency. The second part focuses on the actual amplification of primary school teaching strategies in English reading during the senior period. In the case study of X primary school, the author observes the present amplification of teaching strategies via interview and questionnaire. Also it figures out the existing problems in the actual amplification and traces back to the reasons.The third part is a study on the implementation of teaching strategies in English reading classes during the senior period in X school.The fourth part is the conclusion. Based on the case study of X school, the author generates the following conclusions:Firstly, teachers should change their stock teaching ideas; secondly, teaching strategies should be applied flexibly; thirdly, much more attention should be paid on fostering students'reading habits. Finally, the author presents some suggestion on actual implementation of those conclusions.
