The Change Of College Teachers' Image In China's Transition

College teachers, known as the social elites, have always been the focus of the society. Since the 1990s, various kinds of novels which reflect the teachers have increased gradually, presenting the image of college teachers at the time of changing. At present, facing the transformation of social structure brought by market economy, the popularization of high education has become a policy related to thousands of hundreds of people. With the socialization of universities, college teachers have so much concern.Through the window of literature——the four works of literature which include Southwest Associated University and Chinese Contemporary Intellectuals, You Have No Choice, Who Do You Think You Are and Tao Li, this paper chooses the typical and representative image, the college teachers, as the studying cases, and analyzes the gradual change or mutation of four different images of the college teachers in transition to reflect the change of college teachers'image in the whole community.From those teachers in the stories like Mr. Jia who is stubborn and conservative, Mr. Li who is of splitting personality,Mr. Shao who is self-imposed to business, we can see the images of the college teachers who are lost in the transition of the society. Looking back the intellectualized images of university teachers which blend with the spirits of Southwest General, we have to think that, college teachers ,why do we lost "will of freedom, independence of spirit" of "the soul of learning"…Through analyzing the reasons, we find that the political and economic background provide the changes with a "theatre". The systematization of social polity and the marketability of economy make the college teachers banish academic personality gradually. They use the standard of money to weight the value of life. The impacts of cultural values bring about the confusion of spirit and the resident ideology dispels the elite culture. Then the criteria for judgment according to the value of money and the principles of exchange according to practical interests, which are popular with the public sectors, have attracted the teachers'original enlightenment and dedication values. At the serious crisis of faith, they have to move closer to the utilitarian value orientation and pursue the material desires. The systematic orientation regulates the university's "rules of the game", from the teachers'appointment to the system of income distribution, and to the system of academic evaluation. College teachers increasingly lose the independence and freedom in the systematic rules.Finally, we call for the rebuilding of the soul of learning and seek out the reverted road of the soul. On the one hand, we should revert to intellectuals'academic character and critical spirits; on the other hand, the system needs to be reformed and improved. We can learn from the American. tenure to protect academic freedom. In that way, the university will become the"holy island"at the transition of the Chinese society, which provides the college teachers an institutional guarantee for the intellectual image.
