Jean-Jacques Rousseau's masterpiece Emile ou de L 'education is a pedagogic fiction about a child, named Emile, who is educated naturally by a tutor from infant time to adulthood. Plenty of educational thoughts are involved in the fiction, and the thought about teacher's roles is a unique one. The work is divided into five books: the first four are dedicated to the growing experience of Emile, and the fifth to outlining the education of his female counterpart Sophie, as well as to the education of love. The thought of teacher's roles is among the first four books. In bookâ… with an equal attitude ,the tutor accompanies and interacts with Emile in his infant time, which indicate the role of teacher is a company. In bookâ…¡, Emile grows into a child. According to children' s ability of imitation, the tutor should play a role of example. Rousseau also believes that before being an example, tutor should be a human first, which endows the role of example with a sense of humanity. In bookâ…¢, Emile grows into the state of preadolescence. According to the book, it is time to develop Emile's intelligence. Rousseau expresses that tutor should play the role of guide: Emile is directed to the useful knowledge by the teacher. On the other hand, he is guided by the teacher's questions in order to learn how to reason. In bookâ…£, Emile passes the state of adolescence ,and develops as an adult. Rousseau points out that tutor should be the role of friend. As the description, from three aspects, the tutor helps Emile in a friend way: independent learning promotion; psychological communication; refraining from bad habits. The describing of the teacher's changing roles indicates that the thought of teacher's roles in Emile ou de L'education is a thought of "whole range" roles. This thought is developed from the Emile's whole cultivation process. When the state of student changes, the role of teacher changes. Therefore, it is different from the thought of one-role teacher for the variation. The thought of teacher's roles in the work aims to develop a kind of teacher who is able to address the needs of all ages of learners. Such a teacher shall handle any phase of instruction with his multiple roles and multiple abilities.
