One of the emphases on the new basic curriculum reform is to improve the students' learning method, to encourage the learning method of independent research, practice and cooperation. In the local history teaching in junior middle schools, carrying out research is the effective method of improving students' learning method. The dissertation consists of four parts. First of all, the concept, the base and the implementary status of the local history will be theoretically elaborated. Secondly, the necessity and the possibility of carrying out the local history teaching in junior middle schools will be demonstrated. Thirdly, the further research into the types of research, the exploitation and design of the subject, the instructional strategy and the method evaluation will be presented throughout lots of examples. Last but not the least, the effect of practice on the research will be provided and analyzed. In this thesis, research on the local history can achieve the three-dimensional teaching aim--knowledge and ability, process and method, emotional attitudeand value. It can also improve the learning method and hasten the history teaching. However, there are some difficulty and resistance during this procedure, therefore, in order to carry out the research smoothly, support from school, teacher, parents, students, and even the change of concept in the whole society and support from substance are very important.
