Research On The Current Situation, Issues And Recommendations For Higher Education Of People With Visual Impairment

Education is important and essential foundation for the growth of economic, the sustainable development of society and personal development. Education is pre-condition for the people with disabilities to realize "equality·participation·share", which shows important contents of education equity. With the popularity of higher education, it is an important way to improve the quality of life, social status for people with disabilities into higher education. So, it is not only greatly significant but also urgent to promote and develop the higher education of people with disabilities.The research focused on the current situation and recommendations for higher education of people with visual impairment inChina, which reflected the implementation and issues comprehensively. The researcher surveyed and analyzed the implementation of four representative universities from enrollment, placement, majors, curriculum, support services and employment with the methods of literature study, individual interviews, questionnaires, observation and participation.The results showed that by the end of 2009,395 people with visual impairment are attending.in four universities; there are two main enrollment; 95% of people are placed in special classes,5% attended regular classes in colleges and universities, but the latter develops strongly; in addition to traditional acupuncture and massage, music, psychology, social work profession is opening up to the people; colleges and universities develops specialized training programs or adjust the curriculum, but-reducing courses and degree of difficulty is basic approach; people with visual impairment receive support services, but insufficient and non-professional; people with visual impairment have much difficulties in employment, and the situation of traditional majors is better than some new majors.Finally, numbers of recommendations,such as reforming the existing enrollment system, carrying out the common entrance examination step by step; establishing the special education resource center to provide professional support services,a re given which based on the results from experts'interviews and successful experiences abroad.
