As the administrative head of an university, namely its president, who plays a crucial part in the institution's development process. Nowadays, many people may have already known that having a good operating mechanism is the key to build a first-class educational institution. Nevertheless, no mechanism will be established overnight; therefore, choosing the right leadership has become the most important step to take towards the brighter future of an university. The type of academic background that a president came from has become the key point for our further discussion in my research. Due to the increasing importance of the leadership role that has involved in the further development of an university, researches on the president's academic background has become more and more popular both at home and abroad. In this academic research, It will compare the academic backgrounds of both national and international top university presidents by using literature review, statistics, and comparative research method. Moreover, the paper will conduct a further analysis and discussion about the Chinese university leaders' discipline deflection.To begin with, the paper has selectively gathered the academic background information of both national and international university presidents. The existing researches on this topic have taken two perspectives from history and theory:the former is mainly about the school history and case study, and concentrated expression of the famous University leaders; the latter mainly based on the literature to capture the main theoretical speculation. International and comparative education is another way to evaluate university presidents, research in this area is also considerable, and there are mainly two approachs:one is the investigation of foreign university presidents' selection, how to run a school and the conversion of the role, and the other is a comparative research with Chinese and foreign university presidents.Secondly, based on the comprehensive analysis of both national and international university presidents, the following questions have been raised:Who are the current Chinese university leaders? As the world's largest developing country and developed country, what are the academic backgrounds look like between these two countries university leaders? What are the differences? When compared with the world-class universities, is there any difference in academic subject deflection of Chinese university presidents? And what are the differences between China ane America in terms of the university president's selection mechanism?Finally, through the comparison among the president of Chinese colleges, world-renowned universities and American well-known universities, analyze the current situation and problems on subject knowledge background of Chinese college presedent, trying to take cross-country comparisons on the basis of description about academic background of China and world famous universities, provide references and inspirations multi-angled for those who will become a university president "candidate" and those universities or administrative departments who needed to select principals, point out that the selection of university presidents should be rational distribution, improve the current status of serious bias to science and engineering, ensure that the university presidents lead the university with knowledge, and promote better development and progress of the Universities.
