Autonomous learning stemmed from the requirement of "life-long learning" of the society, and it has become the ultimate goal in the field of education. However, the cultivating of autonomy is not an easy job, for the present situation is not so optimistic:The traditional teaching mode has dominated Chinese education for a long time and "teacher-centered" teaching style has made lots of students rely on the authority of the teachers. On the other hand, the exam-oriented system still directs the current teaching styles. Although this situation has drawn more and more educationalists'attention and the new curriculum criteria for senior high school English teaching has advocated that one of the major objectives for foreign language teaching is to cultivate students'comprehensive language competence and to foster their autonomous learning capacity, autonomy training is still a long way to go and it needs an over-spreading reform across China. It needs the reform on the present teaching situation and needs teachers to be strategic, and to change the role and adopting more strategies in the process of their teaching.This essay exposes the present Chinese education situation and lists the factors which will affect autonomous training. It focuses on how to cultivate students' autonomous learning and provides some feasible ways to cultivate autonomy. In order to show the feasibility of these ways, the writer conducted an experiment in her school, which lasted for half a year. According to the result of the experiments, we can find the fact that the ability of autonomous learning can be cultivated and autonomous learning ability can help students achieve more progress in their study.
