In the field of image coding, one of the goals is to pursue higher performance and lower complexity. With many mathematical methods being introduced into this field, Wavelet transform has been proved to be an effective means. Although some advanced software implementations on WT have got remarkable progresses, hardware implementation also plays a key role in the applications of the image coding. With the increase of resolution of satellite image, higher performance image compression algorithms are in demand. After analyzing the results of the software implementation and the complexity of different wavelet transform, the integer-integer lifting wavelet transform is adopted. Combined with listless SPIHT(Set Partition in Hierarchical Trees), a remote sensing image compression hardware system using FPGA(Field Programmable Logic Array) technology is implemented on VIRTEX chip. Different from other articles which only focus on the architecture of WT/IWT transform, we realize whole image coding system which consider not only transform but also quantization. The experiment results show that the compression algorithm achieves excellent effect in realization complexity and image quality.
