The UMS service has attracted much attention from the telecom community as well as from business circles for its convenience and terminal independency. The background of the work presented in the dissertation is the development of a proprietary UMS (Unified Messaging System) called ZHX-UMS. Based on a comprehensive study of unified messaging systems worldwide, the author and her colleagues proposed a three-layer ring conceptual model for representing the ZHX-UMS and further developed a layered implementation structure. Based on the description of main functions and relationships among the layers, the author aimed at voice information related protocols through the interface of PSTN in UMS,and proposed to supply UMS service by two application-oriented protocols, called the TRDP (Telephone related Dialogue Request Protocol) and the TAKP (Telephone related Protocol between layer A and K).In this project, the author was mainly involved in specification and implementation of the TRDP and the TAKP. As a result of this practice, the author has dedicated her dissertation to techniques and practices for protocol specification, although implementation issues were also discussed in some detail. In the first few chapters, emphasis has been given to the design and implementation of these protocols for the experimental ZHX-UMS,which resulted in a workable prototype system. In last chapter, the author turned over to think the faultiness in experimental ZHX-UMS,and put forward some schemes to optimize the design of protocols in ZHX-UMS prototype system.
