| Along with the development and prevalence of Internet, its data capacity increases quickly. When backbone network is gradually consummated, access network has become the bottleneck of service access. EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network), just like ATM-PON (ATM Passive Optical Network), is another new technology used to resolve user access network which has been paid widely attention. EPON has been considered one of the best solutions about access network because it is accordant with standard Ethernet which now is used widely in local access network. In EPON system, OLT (Optical Line Terminal) and ONU (Optical Network Unit) are the key parts. In order to manage and configure these components well, it is important for manager to design the MIB (Management Information Base).This paper is about the designing and implementing the MIBs in network manangement system of EPON which is a part of an "863" project. The main contents are as follows:(1) Depict the structure of PON, the function of every component in PON system. The structures, functions and technology in upstream and downstream of APON and EPON are discussed.(2) Explain the development of EPON basing the Linux embedded system. Introduce the software system of OLT/ONU parts of EPON, and the software structure of MIB of EPON's EMS (Element Management Sysstem).(3) Introduce the function of network management, the client/sever mode in SNMP, the communication mechanism of this mode. Then put out the blue print to extend the SNMP using SMUX protocol.(4) Explain the relative mechanisms of Linux virtual device drivers. Analyze the feasibility of virtual device applied in EPON network management system. Explain the functions using to implement the virtual devices.(5) In the end, in order to illuminate how to implement the MIBs in the EPON network management system, the realization of SNMP management agent, the source code of MIB modules, and the virtual device drivers are introduced in detail.
