Like many other successful technical innovations, SNMP was confronted fairly early with the problems posed by widespread acceptance and use. One of the first such problems to arise was this: if the manufactures are going to use SNMP to manage all of the products (both of hardware and software), what shall they do?Unfortunately, the answer is "IMPOSSIBLE". As the designers of SNMP didn't expect the popularity of SNMP so they didn't give any consideration to the extensibility of a SNMP agent. Therefore, the heavy demand of developing an extensible agent protocol appeared. This thesis focused on the research, realization and application of extensible agent protocols, details are listed as follows: A comparison of four existing extensible agent protocol implementations will be presented, a brief description of each implementation will be given and similarities and differences between the protocol operations of each implementation will be identified A detailed description of the latest extensible agent protocol AgentX will be given, including PDUs, working procedures and application range A detailed discussion about the application of AgentX protocol, based on SDK AgentX++ A comparison of three different modes (Code modification, SMUX protocol based, AgentX protocol based) to realize an extensible agent, both of the merits and disadvantages are discussed...
