With the rapid development and widely using of multimedia technology, the storage and transmission of digital multimedia information become a hot topic research. Because digital multimedia information, especially video information, is enormous, it must be compressed to store and transmit efficiently. Thus the research and development of video compression have a very important practical significance.In actual image compressing systems, because of the very complex algorithms of video compression and large sum of computing, software method can't satisfy real-time requirement. Accordingly these systems mostly work by using hardware method. In hardware implementing methods, video processing chip for special purpose is powerful but is not flexible, and its application is limited. However, general high-performance Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is applied widely due to flexible software design and powerful adaptive capability. In market of chips for general DSP, TI's C6000 series of DSPs which have strong processing capability, flexible external interfaces and completed development tools are adapted by most embedded image real-time systems.In this thesis, firstly DSP technology, especially TI's C6000 series of DSPs, is introduced so as to make prepare for encoding algorithm research. Then through analysis and comparison for present video encoding standards, MPEG-4 is chosen as the core video compression framework. After that, based on analysis of fundamental technology of MPEG-4 standard and considering characteristics of monitor video and TMS320C6211 DSP hardware, the algorithms including motion estimation, DCT transform and quantification are deeply studied and background block search algorithm, which is based on diamond search algorithm, is used to improve the motion estimation speed. And detection of All-Zero block algorithm is chosen for the reason of static background scene in monitor video encoding application. Later this paper implements the software of modified video encoder and decoder of MPEG-4 using VC on PC platform, which verifies feasibility of modified algorithms.Finally the program is replanted to the C6211DSP by using CCS, and the application optimization in DSP embedded system is mainly based on application architecture and function assembly codes. After the optimization, the application not only meets with the requirements of the monitor system, but also makes a good preparation for the system update the encoding application in the future.
