Background:Lateral Collateral Ankle Ligaments is an important structure of the joint, ensuring the latter’s stability. Ankle injury is commonly seen in clinical, and its incidence rate tops among all injuries of joints and ligaments. If not treated properly, poor recovery will ensue, which will further lead to poor stability of the ankle and repeated sprains. In such cases, the patients will become susceptible to secondary joint adhesion, traumatic arthritis and other complications, with high risk of joint dysfunction.Ointment made from Chinese medicine has received good effects in emergency cases of trauma at the orthopedic department, and it also enjoys merits of low cost and convenient application. With actions of activating blood circulation, alleviating pain, unblocking collaterals and eliminating swelling, such ointment shows remarkable efficacy in treating contusions, sprains and similar emergencies. However, insufficient evidence and data from clinical researches renders its efficacy and safety less convincing.Purpose:This study aims to compare the efficacy of two different treatments, Chinese Chuangshang Ointment and Voltaren, both used in combination with external fixation by elastic bandage, on Ⅰ or Ⅱ degree damage of Lateral Collateral Ankle Ligament. The comparison covers the effects in eliminating swelling, alleviating pain and function recovery.Methods:60 cases of Ⅰor Ⅱ degree closed damage of Lateral Collateral Ankle Ligament, received at emergency department of Wangjing Hospital from February 2015 to February 2016, were randomly and equally divided into two groups to receive different treatments. The treatments last for two weeks and examination was made at the end of the first and second week to evaluate the pain, tenderness, and swelling, and to calculate index of movement limitation and Kaikkonen ankle injury score. Lastly, results were analyzed and efficacy of two treatments evaluated. Results:Given the fact that both experiment group and control group received marked therapeutic effects (P<0.05), compared to the control group, the result of Chinese Chuangshang Ointment at the end of the first week of treatment showed better results in swelling-eliminating, which means earlier start of rehabilitation exercise. Conclusion:Compared with conventional treatment of emergency trauma, Chinese Chuangshang Ointment combined with elastic bandage can function as a unique therapeutic treatment for patients of Ⅰor Ⅱ degree damage of Lateral Collateral Ankle Ligament.
