ObjectiveProfessor Yun Tieqiao was one of modern outstanding physicians that advocated confluence of Chinese and western medicine, he had a good study on treatise on cold damage. Professor Yun deemed that comprehending TCM theories of treatise on cold damage should be based on clinical practice other than superficial literal meaning, and should not be blind faith in theories and experience of medical practitioners in past dynasties and to absorb the essence. At the same time Professor Yun Tieqiao also have tried to combing western medicine knowledge such as physiology and pathology with theories of treatise on cold damage, and formed his unique and special ideology of "reinterpretation of treatise on cold damage" by drawing on theirs merits. Looking up many scholar’s research findings on Yun Tieqiao’s academic thoughts, we find out that general situation of modern research on medical achievements of Professor Yun Tieqiao, which was mainly concentrated upon several aspects such as theoretical thoughts of confluence of Chinese and western medicine, features of traditional Chinese medicine education and academic thoughts and theoretical characteristic in Qunjing Jianzhi Lu, and views of theory of epidemic febrile disease, clinical experience and features of prescription and herbs. Due to fewer studies about his academic ideas of treatise on cold damage, or lacking of systematic analysis, so we study academic thoughts and characteristics of Professor Yun Tieqiao from this point of view to try to direct our clinical practice better.MethodsUnder the guidance of my tutor, using the method of sorting out the traditional Chinese physician literature, mainly taking Professor Yun Tieqiao’s Shanghanlun Jiyi An and Shanghanlun Yanjiu as a blueprint, reading his monograph complete works of Yun Tieqiao, teaching materials of treatise on cold damage, Tieqiao medical journal, Qunjing Jianzhi Lu carefully, combining with some literature on medicine, such as the seventh version treatise on cold damage and other books written by some physicians that had strong influence on Yun Tieqiao, like Dou Cai and Lu Maoxiu. We want to discover the research content containing Yun Tieqiao’s academic thoughts of treatise on cold damage and then grubbed up of it. Analysing the above content carefully, comparing with each other, I arranged Yun Tieqiao’s inheritance and development of academic thoughts of treatise on cold damage systematically.Results1. Give an analysis on Professor Yun Tieqiao’s profile of biography, learning experience, doctor’s experience and his medical works.2. Academic ideas on the developments of traditional Chinese medicine by Professor Yun Tieqiao were introduced.3. Professor Yun Tieqiao’s academic ideas and research on the aspect of treatise on cold damage.ConclusionsProfessor Yun Tieqiao attached great importance to treatise on cold damage and he had an unique understanding on it. Combined with western medicine and his many years clinical experience, Professor Yun Tieqiao put forward to many opinions for the first time, which played an important role in guiding clinical of treatment based upon syndrome differentiation. In this article, I conclude Professor Yun Tieqiao’s academic ideas about treatise on cold damage from the following five aspects:1. Professor Yun Tieqiao defined the salvation of the human body during process of pathogenic factors as ti gong zhi neng. The idea of ti gong zhi neng was very important in Yun Tieqiao’s academic characteristics on treatise on cold damage and it ran through the whole process of medical activities. Besides Professor Yun Tieqiao claimed that objective standard of treatise on cold damage should be made. Moreover, he considered that warm disease under the category of exogenous febrile disease and he also advocated the intergrating of Chinese and western medicine.2. Professor Yun Tieqiao’s understanding of six-meridian diseases was discussed. He preferred to theory of Japanese physician Xi Duochun, which classified clinical symptoms into six kinds of pathological state according to certain rule. And he had negative attitudes to outline of theory of six-meridian diseases. Therefore, he claimed that there were only two outlines of treatise on cold damage, typhoid fever and wind-stroke syndrome.3. Professor Yun Tieqiao’s understanding of six-meridian diseases and related treatment. He thought that Taiyang disease meant disease located on the surface of body and speculated origin of name of exogenous febrile disease and wind-stroke syndrome according to relation between four seasons and six qi and normal physiological phenomenon of human body. And Professor Yun Tieqiao held that Yangming disease located in the stomach and fu syndrome of Yangming located in the intestine, developed Lu Jiuzhi’s theories of no death caused by Yangming disease, and put forward that severe syndrome of six-meridian can be draw into Yangming meridian and then to work out treatment scheme. Professor Yun Tieqiao thought Shaoyang syndrome in "treatise on cold damages" was namely Foot Shaoyang meridian disease in Neijing; And he regarded the three Yin disease just belonged to disease of Shaoyin meridian, Both Taiyin disease and Jueyin disease in treatise on cold damage which distinguished only because of special performance, can be classified into Shaoyin disease, so simple Taiyin disease was cholera and simple Jueyin disease was syncope syndrome.4. Professor Yun Tieqiao proposed that pulse examination, as one of the four diagnosis methods, should not be over-emphasized. Making accurate understanding of disease should be combined with information from other diagnostic methods in clinic. Moreover, he elaborated ten kinds of pulse condition such as large, floating and fast, bouncing, smooth, sunken, astringent, feeble, taut and indistinct pulse mentioned in treatise on cold damage· First chapter of distinguishing pulse by combining with knowledge of western medicine and clinical experience.5. Cases of Professor Yun Tieqiao applying classical prescriptions such as Maxing Shigan decoction and Dachengqi decoction and so on were analyzed to explore his characteristics of syndrome differentiation and application specialty of classical prescriptions.
