ObjectivePeng Zi Yi is a famous doctor in the end of Qing dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China. He has a good understanding not only in classical Traditional Chinese Medicine principals but also in western medical knowledge. Peng takes the special views at diagnose, pattern differentiation and combination of medicines. In recent years, Peng’s theory researchers only focus on his Circle Movement Theory, while there are lack of studies on his major academic thoughts such as Peng’s six-channel, the theory of ying-wei, pathogenic personal qi and transmission through the channel. To get the comprehensive understanding of Peng’s thoughts of cold damage syndrome, I set out to study the subject under the guidance of my supervisor.MethodsThis subject is launched to study Peng’s thoughts of cold damage syndrome systematically by the method of literature research, which focus on The ways of reading six-channels of Treatise on Cold Damage, Formulas in Treatise on Cold Damage Analyzed meanwhile combines with’The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic, Treatise on Cold Damage, Explanation of Unresolved Issues in the’Treatise on Cold Damage’and Explanation of the Meaning of Cold Damage which have important influence on Peng’s thoughts.ResultsThe paper discusses Peng’s thought of cold damage syndrome and consists of three parts. Part one, this part introduces Peng’s career and the root of thought of cold damage syndrome. The study indcates that Peng is smart and has the rich works. According to the record in biography of Peng Zi Yi written by Fang Shu Mei, a famous researcher in Yun Nan, the works of Peng add up to sixteen. In The catalog of national traditional Chinese medicine books, there are three books whose author is Peng Zi Yi. Peng’s thought of cold damage syndrome mostly roots in The Zhou Dynasty Compilation of Changes, ’The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic and Treatise on Cold Damage. He also combines the thought of Huang Yuan Yu and other doctors.Part two, this part introduces the Peng’s contribution to inheritance and development of Treatise on Cold Damage. It is launched in the study of six-channel, the theory of ying-wei, pathogenic personal qi, transmission through the channel and the treatment of syndromes in six-channel. The study finds that Peng’s main thought of cold amage syndrome consists of these parts.Detailed contents are as follows:Firstly, Peng connects six qi and twelve channel to the the five viscera and six bowels to study six-channel diseases. He thinks whether it is exterior pathogen or internal damage, both cannot beyond the range of six qi.There are ying-wei exteriorly and viscera and bowels interiorly in the body, which are both engendered by six qi. Secondly, Peng creatively put the distribution of ying-wei. The ying-wei is defined as total qi in the circle movement which exist in the interior of body and the exterior of viscera and bowels. The ying-wei is the exterior of viscera and bowels. The viscera and bowels are the interior of the ying-wei. He describes the exiting and entering of ying-wei as astringing and flowing. Thirdly, Peng studies the diseases at the basis of pathogenic personal qi. Fourthly, Peng sets out to analyze the meaning of "transmission through the channel" to interpret the connotation of six-channel and laws of transmission. He emphasizes that it is not pathogen violating the body but the damaging of personal qi to cause the transmission. Fifthly, Peng proposes the model of "orange consisting of six slices" as the pathological and physiological of six-channel. There are ying-wei exteriorly and viscera and bowels interiorly. The shaoyang channel exists between the exterior and interior. He studies six-channel diseases in the concept of holism and reveals that six-channel diseases are the nature of damaging of personal qi.Part three, this part introduces the influence of Peng’s thought of cold damage syndrome on the later ages. By collecting and studying Li ke’s thought of cold damage syndrome and medical cases reflecting Peng’s thoughts, we can find that Peng’s thought have the essential theoretical meanings and practical values for the later development and application of academic theory in cold damage syndrome.ConclusionPeng’s thought of cold damage syndrome mostly root in The Zhou Dynasty Compilation of Changes,’The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic and Treatise on Cold Damage. He also combines the thought of Huang Yuan-yu and other doctors. The main contents of Peng’s thought of cold damage syndrome is the study of six-channel, the theory of ying-wei, pathogenic original qi,transmission through the channel and the treatment of syndromes in six-channel. It is the contribution to inheritance and development of Treatise on Cold Damage.Peng’s thoughts have the essential theoretical meanings and practical values for the academic theory in cold damage syndrome and the instruction of clinical applications.
