"Six meridians are streams, stomach and intestines are seas"extracted from"Plain Questions 5, Great Treatise on the Correspondences andManifestations of Yin and Yang", through classification according to manifestation in terms of natural things, streams and seas, is to demonstrate the functions of human organs, bowels and tissues. Streams are in function of linking up with running water, and seas can hold numerous streams. From relationship between streams and seas, it can be considered that there must be some relationship between six meridians and stomach and intestines. They share a variety of connective ways between each other . Diseases in six meridians could be conducted to stomach and intestines in an appropriate way, then pathogen would be expelled by use of purgation, and the diseases will recover.According to Treatise on Cold Damage, this theory can be proved by Persicae Decoction for Purgation, Didang Pill, in syndrome due to accumulation of blood stasis in lower energizer and can be proved by Decoction for severe or mild phlegm-heat syndrome due to accumulation of evil in chest, etc. Therefore it has practical use in clinical. This paper uses literature review to explore the theory of"six meridians are streams, stomach and intestines are seas"and its clinical application of purgation in Treatise on Cold Damage. The part in literature review summarizes the theoretical meaning of purgation and its application in clinical from collecting literatures about studies of purgation in recent years and give a further recognition of its clinical value. The body is separated into three parts:The first part is the theoretical source of"six meridians are streams, stomach and intestines are seas". From extracting and analyzing Internal Classicist and Cold Damage illustrators'treatises on"six meridians are streams, stomach and intestines are lakes", it is clear that six meridian diseases can enter yang brightness. Yang brightness roots in dryness. With exterior cold or heat, or interior cold or heat, dryness can transform into excess, and then caused to constipation. Theoretically, six meridian diseases can be conducted into yang brightness and then treated by purgation. Other five meridian diseases can also be treated by this non-typical purgation. The second part is included tow subparts. First, on the basis of theoretical source, purgation items according to the theory of"Six meridians are streams, stomach and intestines are lakes"in Treatise on Cold Damage Disease is analyzed. It is included three parts: item illustration, analysis on medicinal and formulae and ancient doctors'efficacious case. Second is to discuss the modern application. Under the theory of"six meridians are streams, stomach and intestines are lakes"and the direction of Zhang Zhongjing's concrete application, purgation breaks the limit of the original method which simply applifies purgation herbs, increases the function of defecation of the organism, and treats the excess syndrome of yang brightness bowels by defecation. Therefore, purgation is widely used in clinical. The third part is the summary and discussion. Internal Classic gives us the relative theory and Treatise on Cold Damage points out concrete application. They are combined organically in hope of supplying the train of thought for the development of Tradition Chinese Medicine.
