Objective:To deeply study Professor Jiang Liangduo’s clinical experience and special academic thoughts, we collected and analyzed the medical records of Professor Jiang Liangduo’s outpatients who were clearly distinguished as "Shang Re Xia Han, Nei Re Wai Liang" syndrome. Moreover, we analyzed the data using data mining algorithms and techniques to summarize the features of the syndrome and the regularity of Prof. Jiang’s treatment. We extracted the basic prescription and automatically generated new ones in order to improve the inheritance of academic thoughts of famous old traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) specialists. Methods:This study collected 121 prescriptions in Professor Jiang Liangduo’s outpatients at Dongzhimen Hospital and Dongfang Hospital, from January 2012 to October 2014. For each patient who is treated between one and eight times, we gathered the information including name, gender, age, time of the treatment, number of the treatment, self-reported conditions, symptoms, physical sign, diagnosis, type of syndrome in TCM, method of treatment, medicine, dose, etc. This information is gathered, imported into database and indexed using the TCM inheritance computer aided platform. Common used drugs were obtained using frequency count, the drug combinations and the relations were got by association rule mining, and new formulas were deduced by complex system entropy clustering method. Results:By analyzing 121 prescriptions with frequency statistics, the result shows that the 10 most frequent syndromes are dry mouth, lacking in strength, dizziness, bitter taste, poor quality of sleep, sweating, cold hands and feet, bad quality sleeping, dry defecating, dizziness.Data analysis shows that 239 kinds of traditional Chinese medicine were included in the 121 prescriptions and the most frequently used 20 herbal medicines were Chaihu, Zhiqiao, Guizhi, Huangqin, Zhishi, Chishao, Baishao, Shengshigao, Zhimu, Danggui, Gualou, Huanglian, Jiaozhizi, Jiangbanxia, Baizhu, Tianma, Suanzaoren, Wuzhuyu, Quanxie, Dazao.According to the analysis of the drug properties, based on the theory of four characters, this research found out that the most frequently used medicine are cold medicines (1310), warm medicines are widely used as well (1054). According to the five tastes theory of herbs, bitter medicines are the most frequently used taste (1618), and sweet taste took the second place (1416), which has similar amount with pungent taste (1333). In terms of the channel tropism, most drugs can be classified to liver, stomach, spleen and lung. Conclusion:Data mining techniques can summarize the basic medical rules of Professor Jiang Liangduo’s treatment of "Shang Re Xia Han, Nei Re Wai Liang" syndrome. It can deduce the basic prescription of this syndrome which is generally modified from the Chaihu Guizhi soup. The detailed composition usually includes Chaihu, Zhiqiao, Huangqin, Zhishi, Chishao, Baishao, gypsum, Zhimu, Danggui and Gualou. The main therapeutic method is activating and harmonizing the body, with combination of cold and warm medicine. The author also discussed and validated the results and conclusions of this research with Professor Jiang. He thinks that the basic prescriptions fit the clinical applications and the deduced new prescriptions are somehow meaningful for clinical treatment. Using the data mining techniques to analyze TCM records and prescriptions, we can objectively analyze them from many aspects and angles. The results and conclusions can be instructive for the further clinical practice. Moreover, after the discussion with the famous old TCM specialists for instruction and validation, we can refine the result and make it more practical and instructive for clinical usage. With further exploration, it can help to improve the level of medical skills.
