Image culture plays a decisive role in human civilization, and in some kinds of the visual arts, photography art plays a crucial role in the age of picture-reading. Photography deeply penetrates into human world in all aspects and influences people’s daily life.Photography art depends on photographic equipment. Photo, taken by camera, is able to duplicate reality precisely, and with documentary ability. Photo records the scene of the moments when people press the camera shutter. Therefore, the beauty of photography art exists in instant documentary. The essence of the aesthetic features of photography art is reality. In the world of image, scholars worry about that image will deceive people’s eyes and may even become the barrier of people to know the real. With the coming of digital age, digital technology has been used in photography, which makes the modification of photos become free and popular, and makes people lose the trust in photos. However, digital photography developed on the basis of the traditional photography, its optical principle did not change, and the realistic character was still the cornerstone of digital photography. In the digital age, digital technology will inject fresh blood into the photography art and will promote the development of photography art.This paper is divided into four chapters to discuss the realistic feature of the photography art. which is one of the most essential aesthetic characteristics. Nowadays, in the digital era, image world is questioned sharply and digital technology makes challenge to the development of the photography art. Is the realism characteristic still the most essential aesthetics characteristic of photography art?In order to explore this question, the first chapter of this paper firstly summarizes the disputes about photography which is a kind of new developing and the history of photography as a form of art.The second chapter explores the realistic aesthetic connotations of photography art. Taking the perspective principle, the theory of pinhole imaging and principles of chemistry as the entry point,we discusses the essential sources of photography art’s mechanical feature, and then make a conclusion about the essential feature of the photography art included the realistic, the instant and the past characteristics.The third Chapter discusses the query about images. The image world is accepted generally by people, but, at the same time, it leads us to think bout that the image on the photo is not real. Photography art is formed by the combination of people’s ideas and photography technique, and photographers’ ideas infuse into photos more or less. But when comes to technology aspect of photograph, the representation of photo’s image must relies on the lens of the camera to record the object, so the realistic character of photo is still unshakable.The fourth chapter discusses the challenges which the temporary photography art faced in the digital age. In a period of digital photography, the reality is still the cornerstone of photography art. And digital photography expands the expressive abilities and the expressive spaces of photography art. Digital photography will become an opportunity of the development of photography art in the further.
