Zither, also known as Chinese zither, is a plucked instrumentwith a long history in China. It endows with strong ethniccharacteristics and contains a wealth of cultural heritage. Zither hasbeautiful sound and suitable for various kinds of occasions. In thelong course of history, zither is also undergoing its own process ofevolution. It was originated from the Northwest, gradually extendedsouthward and eventually spread to various regions of the country. As it integrated with the local folk music, opera and rap during itsdeveloping, several zither schools came into being, i.e. HenanZither, Shandong Zither, Chaozhou Zither, Hakka Zither andShaanxi Zither. I think the authentic and traditional zither music isthe foundation for its development. Its unique phonological anddiverse playing skills earn itself high reputation at home and abroad.Zither music becomes flourishing today and the modern zithermusic also springs up. It innovates and improves very fast in termsof both playing skills and forms. Meantime, the traditional zithermusic can not be ignored. As students majoring in zither music, weshould have more comprehensive, systematic and accurateunderstanding of the unique styles and playing skills of different traditional zither schools. The object of this thesis is the comparison between ShaanxiZither and Chaozhou Zither. Based on my personal playingexperiences, I made the analysis from the historical origins, playingskills, music structures, representative figures and works. Thisstudy built a solid foundation for my playing style and skillslearning in the future.
