In Chinese painting art, no matter how we look on the “brush-and-ink”, it alwaysplays an important role in Chinese painting, which is an indisputable fact.“Brush-and-ink” is the important artistic and formal characteristic of Chinese painting, apart from that, it is also Chinese painting’s unique artistic language. Meanwhile, it isa way that Chinese painting expresses its life.Shi Tao, the Chinese famous painter and theorist in Ming and Qing dynasty, notonly shocked many readers with his works, but also attracted Chinese and foreignappreciators of many times with the aesthetic connotation that the Painting Quotationdisplayed. Shi Tao’s discussion of “brush-and-ink” was connected with his paintingontology “Yihua”. His view that “Yihua” is the root and his discussion of the mindconstituted the basis of “brush-and-ink”. Shi Tao opposed to understand the “brush-and-ink” as shallow sketched outline. Shi Tao connected “brush-and-ink” with “masksupport” and “life”, which made “brush and ink” no longer stay in the level of generaltechniques, but be linked with painters’ experience and understanding of the vitalityof nature, which was much more profound when compared to the previous painterswho only discussed the techniques of “brush-and-ink” with the single“brush-and-ink” form.“Brush-and-ink” should keep pace with times”. Since moderntimes, the awaking of people’s self-consciousness has been bound to bring up theflamboyant of modern brush-and-ink. Whether it is the ancients’ harmony betweenman and nature, modern self-discovery or contemporary madness and grotesque, allare the products of their respective time and the self-regulatory process ofbrush-and-ink. The function of brush-and-ink’s language is to convey people’sthoughts and feelings in different periods. Artists in different times have differentliving environments and painted objects, thus it is natural that brush and ink shouldkeep pace with times and epochal character is the most essential character ofbrush-and-ink language. History could not stop. After variation and collision, a newharmony will emerge. We have reasons to believe that new era and spirit must produce new brush-and-ink language. Let us continue the unfinished thoughts ofancients and create the exuberant vitality of nowadays.
