Chinese opera movies have their characteristics while it shares the commonness as a genre of Chinese film art. There is no doubt that a century has witnessed Chinese opera movies since invention. Throughout the history of Chinese opera movies, the character‐driven and gorgeous Shaw’s Huangmei opera films have left a deep impression on Chinese audience. In the meantime, it also created a surprisingly “China’s Impression” for the world cinema. A series of Huangmei opera films that produced by Shaw Bro. Studio has made bold attempts for the modernization and innovation of traditional Chinese opera movies. Differing from Chinese mainland opera film‐making, it takes sweeping reforms to the script revision, directorial technique, film arts, audio‐visual language, costume modeling and incidental music in the production of Shaw’s Huangmei opera films. In this way, it made a breakthrough beneficial to the conversion of traditional opera films in the modern society. Through comparison to Chinese mainland opera films, this essay aims to make a conclusion of creative concepts, directorial technique, marketing and historical meaning of Shaw’s Huangmei opera films. In addition, what needs to be stressed is that Shaw’s Huangmei opera films are not really opera movie. However, judged by the original intention and technique of expression, Huangmei opera film is a“genre film” in the true sense of the word. The essay attempts to analyze the directorial technique of Shaw’s Huangmei opera films through the comparison to Chinese mainland opera films.
