Cultural diplomacy, is also known as public diplomacy. With the rapiddevelopment of globalization and information technology, cultural diplomacy isincreasingly being valued by all countries as an important part of a diplomatic strategy.Cultural diplomacy has a long story in Chinese history and has already penetrated intothe cross-culture Communication. Chinese opera has played an important role incross-cultural communication.In the process of intercultural communication of Chinese opera, Mei Lanfangwas the first Chinese opera artist who stands on the world stage and also beappreciated by many international dramatist. The intercultural performances of MeiLanfang are the most outstanding ones in the history of Chinese cultural diplomacy.This article mainly discusses the intercultural performances of Mei Lanfangrepresentatively in the performances’ effects as well as the role of government.According to the analyzes, we find that Chinese opera is the suitable one to be used incultural diplomacy because of its long history, rich culture backgrounds, and itsoutstanding national characteristics.
