Guzheng has a long history as a traditional Chinese musical instrument. According to the relevant literature and archaeological discoveries, as early as the5th century BC to the third century BC during the warring states era, guzheng is quite popular at the time of the qin dynasty. In the history of the development of guzheng art, there are different characteristics in different times. Since modern times, due to the communication between Chinese and western culture, the art of Guzheng has developed lot of. The thesis is based on the composing techniques as the installment basis, combing the development of Guzheng in traditional periodg, transitional periodand and modern times.The focus of this study is the modern guzheng since1980s. In the modern times, a large number of professional composers, such as Tang Jianping, Tan Dun, He Zhanhao, Wang Jianming, have created a large number of guzheng art, which greatly promoted the development of guzheng art. From these works, the composer both inherited the Chinese traditional composing technique, and draw lessons from the western composing technique, makes a big change in the creation of Guzheng art. At the same time, the performance of Guzheng has been promoted a lot by the creation of Guzheng. Nowadays, Guzheng performers, not only possess the skill of the traditional guzheng performance techniques, but also learn a new skill, such as non-musical technology, music and chords. Guzheng creation and zheng music is inseparable, this thesis attempts to probe into the trends of traditional modern Guzheng in1980s from the the perspectives of creation and performance with using literature research method and musical analysis method, in order to provide the valuable reference frame for the development of modern Guzheng art.
