Quine is a famous logician and philosopher in the20th century. He is deeply influenced by Rudolf Carnap and logical empiricists’scientific philosophy. Quine’s holism was based on the enlightened criticism of the traditional empiricism. The thesis consists of four parts:The first part introduces the background of holism; the second part describes the basic content of holism, including the concept, features, functions of observation sentence, the relationship of observation sentences and observation categorical, the extreme and moderate aspects of holism; the third part analyzes the relationship between Quine’s holism and his other philosophical ideas, particularly the doctrines of three uncertainty, and naturalism; the fourth part, evaluates Quine’s holism from both theoretical and practical aspects.According to Quine’s holism, scientists should always respect the observational evidence and abandon or revise any hypothesis which conflicts with it, while taking an active role in framing a hypothesis.
