During the past80years, the encyclopedia——《Brush Talks from Dream Brook)),writted by Shen kuo in Song Dynasty in China has been being discussed extensively and studied from different professional perspectives. Under this circumstance, I realize that a further study is necessary to be conducted to figure out the meaning of the phrase "exploring Neo-Confucianism to achieve vividness" from Volume XVII of this book, which including some issues such as "What does the so-called ’exploring Neo-Confucianism’means" and "What is the relationship between’exploring Neo-Confucianism’and’vividness’". As most theories of contemporary Chinese figure painting pay more attention on showing "vividness", while be less focus on "Neo-Confucianism". This essay will analyze the phenomenon of the relatively frequent use of the phrase "exploring Neo-Confucianism" in Song Dynasty and accordingly, the key feature of figure paintings put emphasis on reflecting the real life at that time.Meanwhile, certain figure paintings would.be mentioned to show the meanings of The Phrase and represent the inner wisdom of the artists. In order to experience the implication of The Phrase, a combined approach including historical background, ideology and several representative paintings in Song Dynasty will be used. It is highly important to traditional Chinese painting and will bring significant inspiration for the future painting creation.
