Stimulus can be processed either at perceptual or at semantic level. However, are there any similar processing existed in the repetition priming and semantic priming, or there is only perceptual processing in the former while the semantic processing in the latter, all of which have not yet been concluded. The critical point and difficulty of the researches in this field is how to effectively separate the processing of perceptual and semantic level.Using the combined paradigm of attention blink and priming, there are three targets words (T1,T2,T3) embedded in a rapidly stream of words distractors for choose between three words at the end of the stream. T1was not related to either T2or T3, the relations between T2and T3was similar to the relations between the prime-target. This study investigated the processing features of repetition priming and semantic priming with three experimental designs, in which the processing difficulties of prime and target were controlled. In experiment1, we manipulated four kinds prime-target pairs(T2-T3), which were repeated(e.g., decide-decide), semantic related(e.g., water-stream), orthographic similar and semantic related(e.g., illness-ill), unrelated(e.g.,clean-dream). By comparing the reaction time of repeated and semantic related prime-target pairs with that of orthographic similar and semantic related (which was assumed to be processed both in perceptual and semantic levels), we explored whether perceptual processing and semantic processing were coexisted both in repetition and semantic priming. Experiment2supplement Experiment1, two targets (T1, T2) were embedded in a rapidly present stream of words distractors. The third target (T3) is displayed after a few ms at the end of stream. After the present of three targets (T1, T2, T3), the choosing for targets happen. Based on the results of Experiment land2, we designed two kinds of prime-target pictures as perceptual repeated (e.g., two identical dotted figures) and conceptual repeated (e.g., two different morphology diagrams of one object) to separate repeatition priming into perceptual repetition priming and conceptual repeatition priming in Experiment3. By comparing the reaction time under these two conditions with semantic related priming(e.g., the picture of radish-rabbit), we could clarified the processing component in repetition priming. The results showed that, in Experiment1and2, significant priming effect was observed, with the shortest reaction time in semantic related condition;whereas there were no notable difference between repetition and orthographic similar and semantic related condition. In the Experiment3, the reaction time under semantic related and conceptual repeated was quite similar, but much longer than that of perceptual repeated ones. The results of which manifested that the processing of stimuli were different under the conditions of repetition priming and semantic priming, showing that they were processed both at perceptual and conceptual levels in the former while they were mainly processed semantically in the latter. The finding extended to some extent the existing theories of repetition priming and semantic priming.
