John Irving is one of the most representative contemporary American writers inthe world. He starts publishing his works in the1960’s. He has produced severalnovels, short stories and scripts during the last50years. Irving is most famous for hisnovels. The fourth book The World According to Garp is his big break, which receivesextensive concern and numerous readers. He publishes The Hotel New Hampshire,The Cider House Rules, A Prayer for Owen Meany and some other heavy works afterthat. All these novels sell well. At the same time, Irving gets more attention inacademia. All his novels have a distinctive style which is only owned by Irving.It is accepted by both the readers and the critics that Irving’s novel hasdistinguished features. But there’re no conclusions of what the features are. Thispaper focuses on Irving’s novels, combines the whole with the details, and tries tounscramble the artistic features by comprehensive analysis and emphasis on somemain chapters.A key feature of Irving’s novel is the wonderful plot, which is the main reasonwhy Irving has so many readers. Story is the essence of Irving’s every novel. Theattractive story is closely connected with the wonderful plot. The plot of Irving’snovel consists of both real and imaginary components. The real components, theimaginary components, and the relation between them are important expressions ofIrving’s artistic features. The vivid character is another representative expression aswell as the plot. Among all the characters of Irving’s novels, the rich and numerousmarginal men are the most noticeable. The character and plot lead the story ofIrving’s. Besides, repetition is the blood circulation of Irving’s novel. It strengthenseach novel’s artistic appeal. And Irving’s novels become a whole through theconstant circulation. This paper will analyze these characters of Irving’s novel, allthese characters make up the overall style of John Irving’s novel.
