The theory of “Katharsis” is generally considered as Aristotle’s idea ofusefulness on literature, and it is an important part of Aristotle’s theory of tragedy. To delving into the origin of “Katharsis”,we may take Plato’s understanding ofliterature and art as the first point, since Aristotle’s theory of “Katharsis” is proposedagainst it. Then we will trace the source of “Katharsis” in the context of ancientGreece and investigate Aristotle’s real intention with the text of Poetics. I think thatAristotle’s “Katharsis” is a kind of psychological function, it is considered asstimulating and guiding the audience’s emotions in the process of the tragedy.Ultimately through emotional “Katharsis”(referring to vent and divert),so that theaudience get a healthy state of mind and psychological balance.Meanwhile,”Katharsis” has certain universal significance. It is not only applicable tothe tragedy, but also applicable to other types of art, even sports and festivals, etc.On that basis, this paper also attempts to research the reality enlightenment inmodern context.”Katharsis” not only has rich theoretical connotation, but possessesguiding significance for the current literature and art.
