During the late Ming and early QING periods, Mr. Wang Duo is one of the bestcalligraphers in the history of Chinese calligraphy. His calligraphy is very attractive andinventive, which until today still has great inspiration for us to learn calligraphy. Historically, Mr.Wang Duo lived in the late Ming and early QING periods, causing him to become a “betrayer”in politics. The word “betrayer” has great influence to his heart. It’s painful and press him hardlybreath. This complex emotion was vented through his calligraphy. Mr. Wang Duo’s tragic lifehelped him to achieve the sublime beauty in his calligraphy, especially the two creative imitatingcalligraphy ways:“extension rather large” and “irregular imitating”. As he helped to solve theantagonistic relationship of “into the quote” and “out of the quote”: inheritance and innovation ofcalligraphy. The groundbreaking use of “ink up” method in Mr. Wang Duo’s calligraphy resultsin that his cursive wins in force, which are “emphasize on force and conception” and “transfersimplification to complication”. From then on he was known by people, because he injected thebloods of the ancient into learning the art of calligraphy. Mr. Wang Duo successfully imitatedthe ancients’ calligraphy and formed his own artistic style. So people gave different comments tothe calligraphy achievements of Mr. Wang Duo according to the evaluation criteria “using traitof personality to judge the trait of calligraphy”, but during the late QING and early Republic, Mr.Wang Duo’s calligraphy art appeared into people’s eyes again, which was treated objectively,and given rightful historical status. Mr. Wang Duo has great influence to the future generationsand he has largest impact on FU Shan. His calligraphy even impacted Japan and affected onegeneration of Japanese calligraphy style. Mr. Wang Duo’s success undoubtedly comes from hisinsistence of imitating ancient calligraphy style. In recent years, Mr. Wang Duo’s calligraphyonce got people’s attention and his concept of adoring ancient was studied, but little peopleresearched his works of imitating ancients, so studying Mr. Wang Duo’s works of imitatingancients has profound practical meaning.After reading the relevant history books and literatures, analyzing the era fashion of Mr.Wang Duo and presenting the growth experiences of Mr. Wang Duo, it can’t be hard to find thatMr. Wang Duo guided his calligraphy practice behavior as per the ancient calligraphy style andhis behavior of imitating the ancient calligraphy was in the majority during the progress ofadvocating ancients. This article seeks to restore the situation of Mr. Wang Duo imitating theancient calligraphy, trying to find how he brought forth cursive new from the old, so that peoplecan better examine the meaning of imitating ancient calligraphy, re-understand Mr. Wang Duo,get inspiration of learning calligraphy and better guide our calligraphy practice activities.
