Neoclassicism prevailed in the end of the18th century to the middle of the19th century, itreplaced the Roman art and occupy the leading position, French become the center of thewestern culture of this period, some of the major genres of art also be produced, one of the mostimportant is the neoclassicism which delegate with Jacques-Louis David, there is a closerelationship for the appearence of neoclassicism with the French revolution, it is neither areappearance of ancient Greek and Roman art, nor the repetition of French classicism for theneoclassicism of this period, it is an art trend from ancient years to today based on the need ofbourgeois, namely as the neoclassicism. David is the representative of the neoclassicism, he wasborn in a bourgeois family, and want to be a painter when he was small, his relatives as histeacher at began, David took part into the French revolution due to situation. His personalexperience and the revolutionary situation at that time, make his rational thinking in paintingcreation, this also known as the classical revolution because the art is linked with therevolutionary form at that time.This article mainly tells Dawit’s rational thinking in painting. I will explain the reasons of hisrational thinking in painting from four parts. The First part is the introduction about thebackground caused neo-classicism, the second part is to analyst his painting features from hiswhole life which can be divided into four parts: the historic works before the French revolution,then,some historic portraits during the French revolution, some court portraits he createdspecially in the period of napoleon’s domination, and some portrait works painted after thefailure of napoleon’s empire which could reflect the history conditions. The third part explainshow his rational thinking formed which includes two aspects. the last part expounds hismanifestation by comparing analysis with Pussan and Angle from three aspects that covers therheme choice, compositions of the picture and the line in drawing. this kind of drawing hasmade an profound influence on later generations. His history portraits deserve more appreciation.we can analyst his rational thinking in his works no matter from the line he used or the colors inthe pictures. his achievements in portrait has had an effect on his student Angle a well as thepainting style of the academicism. What’s more, the painter. Delacroix who belonged to theromanticism praised Dawit that he combined the reality and beauideal perfectly in hispaintings.This project mainly is studied by some research methods, such as reference method, Theliterature investigation method, theoretical approach, comparison analysis, historical surveymethod, product analysis method, linking theory with practice and so on.
