Along the long history of Chinese feudal society, the Five Dynasties(907-960) and Ten Kingdoms(902-979) period has been among the periods when the whole nation was in a state of separation and fragments. The South Tang kingdom, a small one of the Ten kingdoms and safely situated near the Yangtze river and the Huai river, has during its reign reaped remarkable political, economic and cultural achievements in leaps and bounds. For a certain time, it has become, among the southern kingdoms, one with the vastest land and the most substantial power. The rulers of the kingdom has been using official documents as one of their ruling instruments which was widely applied at that time and which displayed distinctive features of political and economic ecology.This paper consists of four chapters. The first chapter mainly proposes to give a general introduction to the official documents in the South Tang kingdom, analyze its social background against which it developed and delineate its different stages of development. Through investigating the official documents of this period and comparing it with those of different times and those of different kingdoms, the author has summarized its features. The second chapter is devoted to the illustration of the political ecology of this period from the perspective of domestic politics and diplomacy respectively. Based on the official documents of its domestic politics and diplomacy, the author intends to restore the whole picture of the political ecology of official documents during that time and examine their relationships. The third chapter chiefly aims to research on the cultural ecology of the fistical documents in the South Tang kingdom and to explore their relationships in regard to the kingdom’s literature, customs, ideology, etc.. On the basis of the previous three chapters, the fourth chapter will be an evaluation of the significance of researching on the political and cultural ecology of the fistical documents in the South Tang kingdom respectively for the reference of future studies on official documents.Ecology studies of the official documents are quite new and unique. Researches on it from the perspective of official documents, culture, history, ecological aesthetics and politics will be of great importance. Based on the official documents in the South Tang kingdom, this paper has introduced the method of ecological studies in the process, restored the two most important and influential factors—political ecology and cultural ecology, and progressively analyzed the value and significance of ecological studies on the official documents in the South Tang kingdom.
