| In China, English is a compulsory course for students of all levels, from elementary schools to universities. But surprisingly, after over ten years of English study, Chinese students still cannot communicate well with foreigners when it comes to Chinese culture.Chinese Cultural Aphasia refers to the situation that students cannot express Chinese culture because they lack Chinese Culture knowledge or they don’t know the English expression.As English teachers, a question we need to reflect is that why so many students suffer from Chinese Cultural Aphasia after so many years of English study and how we can teach students to introduce rich Chinese culture in English fluently.Based on the relationship between language and culture and intercultural theory, this study is intended to conduct a survey on Chinese cultural aphasia in polytechnic institutes.Questionnaires and interviews are conducted to find out the answers to the following questions: 1. What is the real situation of Chinese Cultural Aphasia of students in polytechnic institutes? 2. What are the relationship among the Chinese culture, western culture, teachers, students, and teaching environment from perspective of cultural ecology?By literature study and empirical study, the author tries to find out the reasons and the countermeasures.The findings of the study are as follows: The students of polytechnic institutes suffered from Chinese Cultural Aphasia very often. It is the imbalance of the five elements in the ecology system of foreign culture teaching that caused the Chinese Cultural Aphasia. The ability of students of expressing Chinese culture relates to the following factors: Firstly, the imbalance of Chinese culture and western culture; Secondly, the teacher, including the teachers’ self-cognitive ability, knowledge reserve, teaching ability, teaching concept,teaching method and teaching content; Thirdly, the student, including the students’ self-cognitive ability, study interest, study motivation, learning initiative; Finally, the study environment, including courses, teaching materials, examination system, curriculum activities and studying resources.As the findings show, the countermeasures of Chinese Cultural Aphasia are listed as follows: Firstly, establish equal and harmonious ecology system of foreign culture teaching.Secondly, attach more importance to Chinese culture teaching and enhance the awareness of Chinese cultural export. Thirdly, diversified teaching activities should be organized in class to help students learn Chinese culture in various ways via different channels. |
