Capturing the spirit of the landscape painting theories developed from Wei and Jin times, the artists capitalized on the unique quality of rice paper and the calligraphic nature of Chinese painting to portray rich human feelings and their admiration for natural beauty. Such works have been an integral part of the evolution of paper-based landscape painting during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. This paper draws on comparative analysis of artistic works of different times-from the transition from silk-to paper-based landscape painting in Song dynasty, to masterpieces of later generations including those of Zhao Mengfu (Yuan dynasty), Wen Zhengming (Ming dynasty) and Shi Tao (Qing dynasty). Through close examination of the various brush and ink techniques applied in their works, I seek to shed light on the calligraphic features of brush and ink and their relationship with rice paper, as well as explore in depth the ethos and pathos conveyed through landscape painting. The key objective is to appreciate the artistic value and human spirit behind Chinese landscape painting which has been so vividly brought to life through the expressive power of rice paper.
