This paper mainly analyses and discusses the ethnic cleansing of poles perpetrated by radical Ukrainian Nationalists and Ukrainian Insurgent Army. This ethnic cleansing has been unknown for a long time because it was oblivious under the shadow of the Nazi genocide against the Jews. After being conquered by Mongolia, Kievan Rus was no longer a state entity. The territory of modern Ukraine was occupied by neighboring powers by turns in the centuries. With the rise and maturity of Ukraine nationalism, reconstruction of Ukraine country has became the goal of the Ukrainian nationalists. Ukrainian nationalism developed more rapidly in Galicia region, which was under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. However Galicia was classified in Poland after the First World War, Ukrainians was the only one who has not obtained a statehood in Eastern Europe after world war Ⅰ, nearly5million Ukrainians was under Poland’s dominance. The polish government implemented a series of suppression to Ukrainians between the two world wars, which further enraged the extreme Ukrainian nationalists. They argued that Ukrainians suffered such an unfair treatment just because the independent Ukraine country was ruined by Poland, so they announced to build a Ukraine belongs only to Ukrainians. The Ukraine country must include all the territories which Ukrainians lived from generation to generation and they must remove all foreign occupiers, so the extreme nationalists targeted the unarmed polish people in southeastern Poland. This paper mainly divided into five parts:The first chapter focuses on the Ukrainian national revival movement before and after the world war Ⅰ. Firstly I account for the history of Volhynia and Galicia’s sovereign change where the ethnic cleansing taken place, then through discussing the development of the Ukrainian nationalist movement, we can understand the course of the Ukrainian nationalist movement before the construction of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. The second chapter mainly analyzes the situation of Poland’s Ukrainians between the two world wars. From aspects on economy, education, and religion to introduce the repressive policies adopted by Second Republic of Poland, we can understand that Ukrainians’ difficult situation in Poland had stimulated the Ukrainian nationalist. And then I discuss the origin and development of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists and it’s activities before world war Ⅱ.The third chapter is the most important section of this paper. I explain the ethnic cleansing of poles perpetrated by Bandera’s faction during the Second World War at length. The killings of poles perpetrated by Ukrainian nationalist during the Soviet occupation had kicked off this ethnic cleansing. After the split of OUN, Bandera’s fraction had controlled Volhynia and began the systematic ethnic cleansing. The climax of the ethnic cleansing occurred between July and August in1943and spread to eastern Galicia in1944-1945, nearly eighty to ninety thousands poles died in this ethnic cleansing. The fourth chapter tells the finally fate of UP A and Ukrainians who still detained in Poland. Due to this tragic events and Poland’s intention to build a national state after the end of war, firstly the Polish Committee of National Liberation signed the agreement on evacuation with Soviet, after Soviet’s refuse to accept Ukrainians, the Provisional Government of National Unity performed the "Operation Vistula" which scattered Ukrainians who were detained in Southeast Poland to the newly merged northeast territory. This action means the end of the long-lasting Polish-Ukrainian ethnic conflict. The fifth chapter is the conclusion part of this article. The last chapter analyzes the reasons why the ethnic cleansing broke out comprehensively. Finally, I draw a conclusion that the ethnic cleansing of poles perpetrated by the radical Ukrainian nationalists, Bandera’s faction, is inhumane nor unjust. Under the influence of integral nationalism, Ukrainian nationalist’s ideal to establish a pure Ukrainian state is on the basis of tramping down other nations, indefinitely expanding their own interest, disparaging other nations. In order to build a pure Ukrainian state, the Ukrainian nationalists’ act of unscrupulously bloody ethnic cleansing should be strongly condemned. No nation can rule over other nations whatever the goal is, and that only all peoples respect each other can we build a harmonious society.
