Based on an individual case, Xi’an Hui Muslim quarter (Hui Fang), an urban ethnic community, this paper wrote form the social linguistics angel, used various discipline theories such as:Cultural linguistics, Ethnology, Sociology, Communication, to analysis the characteristics and status of signboards that belong to Hui Fang on choosing words and characters under the influence of multiple factors.With the growing diversity of information dissemination media, the study of social terms,such as media language、slogan、sign、signboard, is gradually deepening, make social terms for more specifications, unique appearance in the service of communicators and audiences. In recent years, urban language and individual case of language community have gradually become the hotspot of social linguistics, especially the related studies in special populations and minority language communities. This paper is carried out on the basis of the above institute gains, aiming at discovering and summarizing the cultural connotation and national character, through the analysis of Hui Fang’ signboards on choosing words and characters.In the process of national integration and urban modernization, contact and penetration of different cultures will be refracted in the use of language, shows some fusion and times; In the constantly fusion, the minorities while absorbing the essence of other language and culture are also making effort to maintain their own national character and uniqueness. Hui Fang is an urban ethnic community that is mainly composed of the localized Hui nationality, with functions of living spaces, the Islamic cultural area, tourism and business district, the study of Hui Fang’ signboards on choosing words and characters, will help to understand the ability to accept different cultures of Hui nationality, it can also be in a more direct and specific way to explore emotional attitude towards national language and culture of Hui nationality and the status of cultural eco maintenance.This study mainly adopts the combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, to square and analysis signboards that belong to Hui Fang on choosing words and characters. The paper is composed of six chapters.Chapter one is the preface. Mainly defines the research object of the thesis, expanded the range of signboards that the previous studies focus on, in conclusion combed the related research work, involving:study object, research methods, the related research profiles, research value.Chapter two is the signboard language of Hui Fang and its using background. Mainly from the functional division and naming categories to analyze the signboard language, and emphatically from three aspects to analyze the using background of Hui Fang’ signboard language, involving:the classify of Hui Fang’signboard language, naming categories, versatility of Hui Fang, language history and reality of the Hui nationality, the underlying characteristics of the Hui nationality’ language using.Chapter three is the structure and content analysis of Hui Fang’ signboard on choosing words. From the number of syllables and structure to analyze the surface structure of the signboards’ choosing words, and analyzed the deep cultural connotation, from the relationship between the signboards’ choosing words and local culture, the refined-low culture, ethnic culture, involving:the analysis of surface structure, the analysis of deep cultural connotation.Chapter four is the national symbolic analysis of Hui Fang’ signboard on using charters. Firstly, do a statistical analysis of different types of shops’ signboard on using charters; then, form the two angles of the communicator and the audience, to analyze the symbolic of the national class language, involving:the analysis of different types of shops’ signboard on using charters, the symbolic of the national class language.Chapter five is The uniqueness and value demonstration of Hui Fang’ signboard on using charters, involving:the uniqueness of Hui Fang’ signboard on using charters, similarities and differences between the signboard of the hui nationality and han nationality under the background of mainstream culture.Chapter six is national language use and cultural development, involving:language attitude and ethnic identity of Hui Fang’ residents, the signboard language’ national character and uniqueness, modernization of Hui Fang and the maintenance of cultural eco.The value of this study lies in making a real, comprehensive reflection on signboards that belong to Hui Fang on choosing words and characters, starting from the specific phenomenon of language use, discusses Hui nationality’ language using and the value and function of its ancestors’ language in the process of fusion.The main conclusions are as follows:the Hui nationality has a strong ability to accept different cultures, it is a combination of a variety of cultures, on the background of Chinese culture, the signboard of the hui nationality and han nationality have so much same cultural connotations, such as:Chinese traditional culture, regional culture, but they have different cultural core; different business types of shops have different features on using charters, national class language mainly plays the role of national symbolic signs. The semantic content of national class language is less than the performance of its language symbol, both the communicator and the audience complete information transmission mainly through the performance of national class language symbol, that is to say the national class language comes into play in the signboards only by being as a kind of national symbol, the completion of information based on the common culture, the insights is the main innovation of this study.
