An Analysis Of The Conversational Implicature In Korean Films

As the most important communication tool, there is no need to discuss its importance. In our daily conversations, a sentence is not only expressed by its literal meaning but also by its implicature meaning. According to Grice’s theory of conversation, the participants of a conversation should comply with4maxims, which are the maxim of quality, the maxim of quantity, maxim of relation, and the maxim of manner. But the speakers often violate these maxims intentionally, which creates conversational implicature. So it’s important to understand not only literal meaning but also implicature meaning when in conversation, which helps to get conversational skills.This paper aims to reveal the number of conversational implicature and to analyze its type and frequency, and search the reasons by actual examples. To attain this goal, I selected3Korean movie scenarios as the analysis data, and then turn-takings are counted through all the texts. The result of the analysis is as follows.The frequency of the conversational implicature of 《(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)》 is90for18%in501, the violation of maxim of quality is9for1.4%, the violation of maxim of quantity is31for6.2%, the violation of maxim of relation is46for9.2%,and the violation of maxim of manner is6for1.2%. The frequency of the conversational implicature of 《(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)》 is104for17.5%in587, the violation of maxim of quality is12for1.9%, the violation of maxim of quantity is42for1.7%, the violation of maxim of relation is36for6.1%, and the violation of maxim of manner is14for2.4%. The frequency of the conversational implicature of 《(?)(?)(?)》 is89for16.1%in547, the violation of maxim of quality is19for3.3%, the violation of maxim of quantity is28for5.1%, the violation of maxim of relation is22for4.0%, and the violation of maxim of manner is20for3.7%.There are some reasons of the occurrence of the conversational implicature. The metaphor, hyperbole and irony were used when the violation of the maxim of quality happened, and the violation of the maxim of quantity happened when don’t want to offer the information, or the speakers violate it to express their happiness, sadness, or anger and so on. The violation of the maxim of relation happens because the speaker prefers a funny way to the plain one when he speaks. Lastly, the maxim of the manner is violated because both the speakers and the listeners understand the background of the conversation.
