The Contradiction Of Jin Shengtan 's Literary Theory And Its Reasons

The thesis focuses on Jin Shengtan’s Shuihuzhuan Commentaries, exploring the content and contradictions in Jin’s literary theory. Furthermore we discuss the representation of the contradictions in Shuihuzhuan Commentaries and then the reasons. In the discussion we can discover a unique way open by local intellectuals in Ming Dynasty.Chapter One separates Jin Shengtan’s literary theory into three part:purpose, method and development of method. Jin Shengtan’s theory is based on the the late Ming troubled times in which he established. In Jin Shengtan’s theory, the root causes of the troubled times is abstracted as a "proliferation of private book pernicious influence world(私书泛滥流�'天下)”,what proceeding Jin Shengtan back to two historical cases of Confucius writing books and Qin people burning books and draw his own purposes as writing book to solve its opposite "proliferation of private book". Therefore Jin Shengtan’s method is "Genius(才)", what is proposed for the purpose of this contradiction. The theory-building of "Genius books(才子书)" hope to be able to enhance the intellectual level of the average person to elite height. In order to resolve this contradiction, in development, Jin raise the reading method of "Zhong(忠) and Shu(恕）", and extend it to the generally epistemological height. But problems occur where the Genius books are beyond his theory.Chapter Two focuses on the two main contradictions at Jin Shengtan’s Shuihuzhuan Commentaries:Song Jiang and the rewriting of ending to examine Jin Shengtan’s amendment of the contradictions in his theories by his rewriting and commentaries. He use Song Jiang’s transformation to resolve his ambivalence about the Liangshan heroes and rewriting of ending to isolate fiction and real world, and show the abstract expression of transformation of reality by the fiction.Chapter Three shows Jin Shengtan’s way of Wuzhong Genius that is different from the literati of Fushe by inspecting Jin Shengtan’s real life."Zeng Dian’s Ideal(曾点之志）" which is represented by his name "Shengtan " is the theoretical basis and portrayal of his way of Wuzhong Genius.
