Marx and Engels expressed their new world outlook as historical materialism. This formulation also reveals that the goal of Marx’s philosophy is to grasp the essence of the history. Unlike the rational historicity of traditional metaphysics, the ontological principle of Marxist historical materialism is sensuous historicity. Although metaphysical historicity considered history a process of self-realization as a human being, it ultimately is the self-expansion of the spirit and actually has only found the abstract, logical, speculative expression for the movement of history. Moreover, Feuerbach tried to save the "thing" which was devoured by the logics with the principle of "sensuousness-objectivity", but it is mere "sensuous contemplation", so once he got into the field of history, he must take refuge in a double perception which in essence became the historical idealism. Marx’s historical materialism has seen the limitations of Hegel and Feuerbach, and it is in the "sensuous activity" that Marx reforms the principle of historicity&the principle of sensuousness, thus truly grasp the history in a sensuous way. The task of the dissertation is to figure out where the "sensuous activity" came from and where it is to go. The former is related to the principle of "pure activity" and Feuerbach’s principle of "sensuousness-objectivity"; the latter is related to the real, positive science which is the representation of the practical activity, of the practical process of development of men.So the aim of the introduction is to emphasize the importance of clarifying the ontological basis of historical materialism. And thus the dissertation comprises three parts. Chapter Ⅰ is a retrospective analysis of the historicity of the completed metaphysics. Chapter Ⅱ is to examine the merits and the limitations of Feuerbach’s principle of "sensuousness-objectivity"; Chapter Ⅲ is based on the "sensuous activity", and we’ll explain in detail how the metaphysical historical principle and the sensuous principle "united" in historical materialism, in a bid to consolidate the fundamental significance of historical materialism in the contemporary life.
