A Study Of Hu Shi 's Pragmatism

HuShi(1891-1962),alternative named Shizhi,is prestigious philosopher and influential ideologist in Chinese contemporary philosophy history.HuShi had make great achievements in all kinds of academic areas and completed amounts of articles and literatures.Readers can find a clue of Chinese modern society ordinary developing courses in which he is involved and experienced from his literature.HuShi had studied abroad for seven years,during that time he learned pragmatic philosophy from philosopher John Dewey.Hu introduced pragmatic philosophy into China detailedly but not just be confined to the theory.Hu’s pragmatic philosophy is not the ordinary Dewey’s,which is different from the ordinary one because he integrated his own academic background and understandings to refine a new one. This article mainly analyzes the HuShi pragmatism thought forming process,theory origin and from three aspects:methodology, empiricism,truth to explore Hu’s understanding of pragmatism.And also discusses the Hu’s pragmatism thought’ role in the history of philosophy and application of political thought. Article also analysis influence of pragmatism thought on three aspects,including HuShi himself,Chinese academic areas as well as social practice.HuShi introduced the pragmatism in his research idea and life beliefs from practical perspective. He carried out pragmatism all his life.He brought pragmatism to China and made it develop and root.It means pragmatism has the vitality after the process of absorption, assimilation of Oriental culture and adapted to the actual situation of China.Actually Hu’s pragmatism is different from the original one. Hu’s pragmatism thought is practical pragmatic. He absorbed and transformed of western academic thought at the same time and his academic attitude is in line with dialectical principle--discard the dross and select the essence as well, which inspired significantly people today who are learning western academic thinking and resolve to carry on excellent culture.
