The design of modularity originated from the German Scholar Loathar Ledderose’s proposal of the production of modularity and scale production theory in the book "Ten thousand things", Ledderose concluded the seven rules of modularity production:1. Large quantities of units; 2. Having an interchangeable modular structural unit; 3. Division of work; 4. High degree of standardization; 5. Growth caused by adding a new module; 6. Proportioned rather than absolute precision scales; 7. Production carried out by replication. From this theory we conclude the three key elements to modular design method:I, Aim at the structure of the object for decomposition analysis; II, Identify the module for constituting the object, and to deform such; III, Recombine the new application module, thus complete re-design innovation. Many structural formation features of traditional Chinese characters, patterns are characterized in having a modular system in itself. This has provided contemporary designers the basis for innovation. While discussing the technical aspects this paper also extends to the inquiry of the traditional creative spirit of the Chinese, hence, traditional creative spirit is within the framework of Chinese Art, it unleashes the endless instinctual creative spirit during the ever-changing detail depictions.Japanese designer Sugiura Yasuhira once commented during an interview "we are often shortsighted, only thinking about moving forward one step at a time. In order to move forward with a stronger step, one must carefully confirm the support of the two steps prior to this step, sometimes the last two steps are even more important" The rise of China’s design is inseparable from its foundation, ancient traditional Chinese text and pattern are the strong roots to Chinese design, China needs to learn more from the nutrients of the traditional to have more distinctive design, at the same time we need to add innovation to what has been acquired through the traditional. Modular design methods provide us the process from analysis to innovative applications, but this is not the only method, the more attentions are being paid to the traditional, the more research can work for us, in contribution to the Chinese design.
