As the first music education torchbearer and forthgoer in china, Zeng Zhimin has his own penetrating insights, and makes great contribution to modern Chinese musical development. Due to all kinds of historical reasons, we did not research and evaluate him deeply and comprehensively. Actually, many of his works are initiative and authoritative, though we did not study and comment particularly. They are almost be said the first research results in Chinese musicology field, which is fundamental to our music discipline. By studying and researching those, it is helpful to investigate modern Chinese music thought deeply and understand the music thought of Zeng Zhimin sufficiently.The author will comprehend and evaluate whole life of Mr. Zeng Zhimin from three aspects: music practice, core of music thought and historical contribution. In Chapter One, the author has is aim to give a brief introduction about music practice of Zeng Zhimin as social music activist, theory author and the pioneer of school education, which reviewing Zeng Zhimin’s music activities in Japanese. In Chapter Two, the author conclude main content of Zeng Zhimin’s music education thought and elaborates three aspects: school music education, traditional music improvement and musical function. In Chapter Three, the author discusses historical contribution of Zeng Zhimin from three aspects: first,as planner of “blueprint” for education; second as ideologist of education theory, which Zeng Zhimin realized it is traditional music improvement that can lead to self-improvement; finally, as pioneer of education practice, which Zeng Zhimin has a sense of responsibility of national music education, has the consciousness of building fundamental music theory to blossom music education and has the foresight of creating teaching material.
