Esoteric Buddhism was an important group of Buddhism;witch came from the final stage of Buddhism.Esoteric Buddhism took in a large number of gods and theurgies from Brahmanism and other folk religions of ancient India,with development,it created its own system.The distinguishing features of Esoteric Buddhism were highly organized incantation,ritual procedure and secular beliefs.Esoteric Buddhism was different from other group of Buddhism,its essential spirit was considered that taught by Vairocana Buddha,and people who have received the secret initiation rites——abhiseca were considered qualified to learn.Since the introduction of Esoteric Buddhism to China,the Chinese social customs was affected deeply by the unique beliefs and practice methods.Take example of the most famous novel of gods and monsters Journey to the West,it put up tracks of Esoteric Buddhism.Looking back on the forming process of Journey to the West,Da Tang San Zang Qu Jing Shi Hua(大唐三藏取经诗话),puppet play San Zang Qu Jing(三藏取经)and Zaju of the Yuan Dynasty Xi You Ji(西游记)created by Yang Jingxian had one same theme:pilgrimage to the west for Buddhist scriptures.The text contents of these three stories were almost completed,the character set also close to Journey to the West.They were created in different times,showed up the process of pilgrimage for Buddhist scriptures stories.This paper tries to research on these three kinds of texts,and find clues concerned to Esoteric Buddhism.This paper has three parts. First of all, some gods from Esoteric Buddhism were discussed like Anguli-malya, Marici and Avalokitesvara. Combine the text contents with the process of Esoteric Buddhism; reflect the population of esoteric spirits. These gods of Esoteric Buddhism also indicated its multi god worship.Secondly, the belief of Vai?ravana that run through the pilgrimage for Buddhist scriptures stories was expounded and with time went by, it found a decadent trend.Esoteric School was formatted in the Mid Tang age, in the same time; the belief of Vai?ravana was so advanced background of the northwest war. God Vai?ravana was well known and considered be able to protect the whole land. Nalakuvara was son of god Vai?ravana, who also turned up in the stories; his magical power was six arms and three heads, which is a unique color of Esoteric Buddhism.Finally, this dissertation focuses on the important feature of Esoteric Buddhism:incantation; it took part in the whole formation process of Esoteric Buddhism. Thepilgrimage for Buddhist scriptures stories contained a great deal of incantation description; which explains the practice method of Esoteric Buddhism was popular.Illusion magic and the method of pray for rain were also told in these stories, both of them related to incantation. The Esoteric incantation had a hold on daily life and folk customs.In short, this paper focuses on the contents related to Esoteric Buddhism of the pilgrimage for Buddhist scriptures stories; combine with the development process of Esoteric Buddhism, reveal the population of Esoteric spirits and the practice methods influence of folk customs.
